Tian’anmen Square


Tian’anmen Square
Located at the center of Beijing City, Tian’anmen Square is the largest urban square in the world. The sheer
wealth of historical sites and the political importance of the area make it a must-see for travelers to Beijing.
This is not only the physical centre of China, but also the centre of power and politics.

Tian’anmen Square now covers an area of 44 hectares, big enough to accommodate one million people for
public gatherings. It measures 880 meters long form north to south, and 500 meters wide from east to west.
There have Tian’anmen Rostrum, Monument to the People’s Heroes, Great Hall of the People, Mao Zedong
Memorial Hall and China National Museum in the square. And you also can see the national flag raising
ceremony here.

At the northern end of the Square is Tian’anmen Rostrum. It was first built in 1420 and was originally called the Gate of Heavenly Succession,
which served as the main entrance to the former Imperial City.

The Monument to the People’s Heroes is at the center of the Tian’anmen Square, which was build in 1952, in order to commemorate the people’s
heroes who laid down their lives in the course of the Chinese revolution and the Chinese liberation. Not only is it an historic memorial for immortal
heroes, but also it is an artistic work of excellent architectural value.

West of the Square is the Great Hall of the People. This building is the place for holding conferences of the National People’s Congress and
provides an impressive site for other political and diplomatic activities.

Mao Zedong Memorial Hall is at the south side of the Square. In the center of the hall, there is a crystal coffin in which Chairman Mao’s body lies
stately with the red flag of the Chinese Communist Party covering over him.

Tian’anmen SquareAt the east side of the Square is the China National Museum. It is a combination of the
Museum of Chinese History and the Museum of the Chinese Revolution. Each museum
have a lot of material objects, pictures, books and models to present the long history and the
development of modern China.

Today, Tian’anmen Square attracts millions of people from all over the world every year. The
local people just go there and relax, fly kites or enjoy the beautiful kites in the sky. Nowadays,
Tian’anmen Square is a place for celebrations during important festive occasions, such as
National Day on Oct 1st.
