Nanchang+Wuyuan birding tour (5 days) GW-BW-007

Birding tips:

  • Every Oct. – Mar. is the best time for migrating birds in Poyang Nature Reserve.
  • Be careful not to wear brightly colored clothing, because the birds are sensitive to colors.
  • With 600mm lens + Digital SLR camera is a plus to shoot birds.
  • Don’t touch the water, there are blood sucking worm in the water. 
  • Please protect the ecological birdwatching, do not disturb the birds.

Itinerary :

Day 1/ Arrive at Nanchang-Poyang Lake
Arrive in Nanchang, the capital of Jiangxi Province, bordering the Poyang Lake in the southwest, lies in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze
River. The guide will pick you up from railway station or airport. Then drive to Poyang Lake (1.5 hours), Birding for the rest of the day, stay at the
Guesthouse in Poyang Lake Nature Reserve. (D)

Day 2/ Poyang Lake

Birding at Poyang Lake,Siberian Crane(Global endangered) is undoubtedly the
reserve's star attraction, over 95% of the world population (the global population is
estimated 3000 more)winter here, as do even larger numbers of the equally majestic
White-naped Crane(Global vulnerable) and Hooded Crane, Oriental Storks(Global
vulnerable). Besides, Large flocks of geese includes Swan, Bean, Greater and lesser
White-fronted(Global vulnerable). Large flocks of Eurasian Spoonbills, Falcated Duck,
Baikal Teal, Northern Pintail, the rare Baer’s Pochar(Critically endangered), Pied Avocet,
Spotted Redshank, Japanese Quail, Spotted Redshanks along with many other
waders. Stay overnight at Guesthouse in Poyang Lake Nature Reserve. Our guide will
prepare picnic lunch, and you will spend all day long around the Nature Reserve. (B,L,D)

Day 3/ Poyang Lake-Nanchang-Wuyuan

After a final morning birding at Poyang lake,drive back to Nanchang Railway Station (2 hours) and take the High-speed train to Wuyuan (2 hours), a
picturesque small town in the northeast of the province, with a forest coverage of 80% of the total area and without many polluted industries,
Wuyuan is the optimal inhabitants of many kinds of birds, there are approximately 370 bird species, this small remote county is known as one of the
best birding destination in southeastern China. Birding in the afternoon upon arrival, if time permits. Stay overnight in Wuyuan, check in the
Guesthouse. (B,L,D)
Day 4/ Wuyuan
Full day birding around Wuyuan. Go to many different villages where the forests or wooden land nearby, birds here to see: Grey-headed Parrotbill,Bird-Watching
Chestnut Bulbul, Collared Finchbill, Hwamei, Black-throated Tit, Silver Pheasant,
Scaly-sided Mergansers(Global vulnerable). The habitat for merganser is only 3
kilometers far away from a village along the Le' An River, this spot is proved a
very reliable one for mergansers, we constantly seen them in recent years since
2008. Other birds here: Short-tailed Parrotbill (Global vulnerable), Chinese
Bamboo Partridge, Grey-sided Scimitar Babbler, Fork-tailed Sunbird, Grey-
capped Woodpecker, Pied and Common Kingfisher, Little, White-Crowned
Forktail, Gray-chinned Minivet, etc. Stay overnight at Guesthouse in Wuyuan.

Day 5/ Wuyuan-Shanghai
The last morning birding in Wuyuan. Birding nearby Wu river, you may see Great
spotted, Grey-headed, Gray-capped Pygmy Woodpeckers, Eurasian Jay, Yellow-
billed Grosbeak(Chinese) , Japanese Waxwing, White-browed,Masked
Laughingthrush, Vinous-throated Parrotbill, Mandarin Ducks,etc. Then move to
another village in the northeast Wuyuan for Pied Falconet (Global near
threatened), you may also see little forktail, Asian-barred Owlet, Crested
Kingfisher, Plumbeous Water Redstart along the river there, than take the high-
speed train to Shanghai (G1507 Departs at: 14:13, arrived at 17:58 in Shanghai)
or your next stop. (B,L)
