Yangpachen (Yangbajing)

About 87 kilometers (54 miles) away from
Lhasa and covering an area of 40 square
kilometers (2,471 acres), Yangpachen gains
its fame from the abundant geothermic heat
which provides people with much to explore.

The noted Yangbajain Geothermal Site and Hot
Springs, located west of Yangbajain Town and
skirted by the Qinghai-Tibet Highway, are only
90 km from Lhasa.

The Yangbajain Geothermal site features
bubbling hot springs in which eggs can be
cooked ready for consumption in just a few
minutes. The water is rich in sulfur and other
mineral elements.

Nyaingqentanglha is held by the locals to be a
holy mountain with a watery lover called Nam
Co, which they deem holy, too.

In Tibetan Nam Co means "heavenly lake",
while in Mongolian it means "Temgeli Sea". With an elevation of 4,178 metres, it measures 70 km East-West and 30 km South-North. It is 33
metres at its deepest. With an area of 1,920 square km, it is the highest salt-water lake in the world and the second largest of its kind in China.

In the eyes of the Tibetans, Nam Co is the partner of Nyaintanglha and the Guardian of the Bon religion.

When Tibetan Buddhism gained ascendancy in Tibet, the lake became Guardian of Tibet. The Tibetans believe the lake is the incarnation of a
goddess and dipping in its waters can help cleanse one of sin.

Given this belief, many come from Xinjiang, Gansu, Ningxia, Qinghai, Sichuan and Yunnan as well as India, Nepal, Bhutan and Sikkim to take
ritual walks around the holy mountain and the holy lake, especially in the Tibetan Year of the Sheep.

It takes about one month for one to complete trip around the lake. Ritual walkers believe one can become a Buddha in 100 years, but this long
process can be dispensed with by a single circuit of the lake. Yangpachen (Yangbajing)

Moving further south, we are close to Yangpachen, the terminus of Qinghai-Tibet Railway.

A singular location and plentiful snow both make it possible to form hot springs here. People are
amazed to see that while the neighboring regions are areas of frozen soil covered with ice for over half
the year, there exists a 40-sqaure kilometer area which is a carpet of lush green grass. It is said that
Yangpachen in the morning is most attractive when it offers visitors illusions of a fairy land. When the
air is still cool in the early hours of a day, masses of mist rise from the lake like a sea of cloud.
