Tashilhunpo Monastery

The Tashilhunpo Monastery, the biggest Gelugpa monastery in the Tsang regions of Tibet, located on the
southern slope of the Nyima Mountain to the west of the Xigatse City.

It covers an area of about 300,000 square meters with a floor space of about 30,000 square meters, it is
one of the “Four Famous Monasteries” of the Gelug Sect of Tibetan Buddhism.
Painted in red and white, the buildings in the monastery stand closely together in terraced rows, offering
a grand and majestic view.

The most amazing image in this monastery is the statue of giant Maitreya. This giant statue stands 26.2 meters in height and 275kg in weight
of solid gold, and it is decorated with copper, pearl, diamond and other precious stones. Visitors can tour the upper floors of the chapel using
a wooden staircase to see the statue more clearly and appreciate the superb skill of the Tibetans.

Tashilhunpo Monastery also treasures characteristic wall paintings. Because of the variety of shapes, resplendent colors and exquisite painting,
the murals are considered to be another masterpiece of Buddhist art.

Tashilhunpo MonasteryAnd there are many other valuable and rare historical articles in the monastery, among them are found
a lot of gold and jade signets, and imperial certificates bestowed by Emperors of the Ming and Qing
Dynasties as well as a seal of "Daitu" of the Yuan Dynasty scribed in the new Mongolian language
reformed by Basba. They are of great value for studying the history and society of Tibet.

In August on the Tibetan calendar each year, Lamas in the Tashilhunpo Monastery hold the Ximoqenpo
Festival the Holy Dance Festival. Originally a religious ritual to drive away evil spirits, it gradually evolved
